Do the colours of the rainbow flag and the (unrelated) colour of his jacket provide information?
For those that may not know the meaning of the rainbow flag: it was designed by Gilbert Baker in San Francisco in '78 to symbolise gay and lesbian pride. This shot was taken on the day of Gay Pride New York 2004. Lewis was using it as his backdrop for the occasion. He makes Polaroid portraits.
I often hear 'If you want to show someone's soul use B&W, if you want to show their clothes use colour'. I don't entirely agree.
I haven't seen him since I took the picture - chance meetings. I don't think that Lewis would be offended by the removal of the gay reference. BTW I do not wish to infer anything about Lewis. He used the flag as a backdrop on that particular day, that's all.
I'm still pondering this question. Truth is that it was a chance shot, and I had colour film in the camera because I was in a colour frame of mind.
