Guys, thanks for the compliments. The photo was taken from the top of the ski lift at Lake Placid New York. Unfortunately you are not allowed up on the ski lift earlier in the day. This was taken at about 1130 AM. I would have loved to been there at about sunrise. 1995 was an extraordinary year for color in the High Peaks area of the Adirondaks. In fact I had gone up to this area (and hope to again this year) I believe every year from 1994 to 2002). No other year in this time period had color like this.
The color is very close to what was there (or at least as Fujichrome Velvia 50 will record). I had to use a warm polarizing filter to return some color that was being lost at this time in the morning. What is so interesting about the colors are the conifers (with a little red) in the very foreground, the near mountainside in golds and yellows, the deep blue of Lake Placid itself, and the area surrounding and the islands in Lake Placid that are largely red. The colors are obviously attributed to the kinds of trees, but I know that at least in the vicinity around Heart Lake (which is nearby and where the Adirondak Mountain Club Lodge is located) there was a major fire in the early 1900s.
Also, from this vantage point Lake Placid is vewied at a diaganol. Most of the time you see the lake straight on.
The colors and the image really come to life as it is printed large. And when it reaches 24" x 30" it is quite impressive. This photo sells well at Art shows and receives quite a lot of attention. This perenial best seller is probably my 6th best selling image.
