Lake Erie

I love the lake, and this was just one of those days. - no one around - just me & my 4x5 :)

I'm going to attempt to make more 5x7 prints so I can scan them instead of the negatives. Here's my first attempt. I see a little vignetting on the left (sky) but this was just a quickie print before work. I burned in the sky to bring out the clouds. I think I'd like to get a graduated ND for my 4x5.

That is a lovely image on my monitor. A beautiful print I imagine. Perhaps you used an orange filter on the camera?

thank you dpurdy,

I used a two-stop (solid) neutral density filter and then burned in the sky in the print. I think it would be fun to try a color graduated filter, maybe red to add contrast in the clouds.

I love that Lake, too, and bet I'm only miles from your area, here in Madison. I saw the clouds in the thumbnail & thought. "Those look like Erie clouds".
Nice shot & good usage of the Lake's abundant photo-ops!

Dorothy, I think this is a print worthy of a lot more work to it. You can also stack filters on your lens, orange and ND - I do it all the time.
I like the bright streak on the horizon, and the beautiful subtle tonal shifts on the water surface and the gorgeous wave movement. I think the little pebbles on the beach are worth bringing out with higher contrast, and the sky as well. Split grade printing?
Very nice presence. Great mood and atmosphere. I'd really like to see where you take this print.
