From a short series titled After Rodin, drawing inspiration from famous Sculptors. This, La Danaïde... but without her hair.
Caffenol print, with my standard magnifying glass lens.
Hello Nicholai. My process for most of my recent work has been to use a Dollar-Store magnifying glass in lieu of a standard lens. I have several crude aperture stops cut out of black card that fit on the lensboard so I can shoot at anything from f3.5 to f64. This is almost wide open at f6.5. I moderate light levels so I can use a lens cap for a shutter. I believe this was 8 seconds. I DO have several actual lenses of varying pedigree, but for the work I am doing here, printing in Caffenol, I prefer the look of the magnifying glass. Thanks for looking. Tom
I love this, not least because to my eye it really captures the character of the Rodin. For good or ill, though, I can't look at this series of yours without being reminded of Man Ray's "Mr & Mrs Woodman" photos! -NT
Thank you. I had not seen the Man Ray works previously, and as this was my own personal study of trying to impart human emotion in the wooden figures, I purposely avoided researching any previous work done in this vein. I know it is a fine line to walk between derivative art and personal study. In my studies, my mannequins have been dancers, Adam and Eve, warring couples and now the works of Rodin. Cheers, Tom
