Kunsthistorisches Museum, 1973

When I was stationed in Turkey, I took a side-trip to Vienna, to this outstanding museum, carrying my Electro 35GT. I don't know how I found the nerve (so young then) to ask the artist if he would interrupt his painting and lean a bit to the left for me as I composed the shot, but he graciously complied.

Great - this works on many levels! The figures are still missing in the painters image - one wonders if they will be added later. And you composed all this with the diagonal from bottom right to top left (including the kind movement of the artist you requested) to another piece of art - your photography.

It works well. I suspect he interpreted you asking him to lean as meaning that he was important to your artistry as a photographer and/or it was simply a gesture from one human enjoying his hobby to another enjoying his.The very fact that nowadays we are pleasantly surprised to get compliance with this kind of request gesture and expect to be ignored or worse to happen should send shivers down our spines. It bodes ill for the human race

Is this still done today , I mean the artist study in front of the original piece of art? Nice inside and out flow from the photograph to the inner comps of the paintings here ...

Thanks deeply for your comments. Yes, one can still see artists at work, copying the masters.

Very nice picture, good composition! And if you want to learn something about the painting "the art of Painting", read: "the art of describing" from Svetlana Alpers. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you so much for the reference. I've read an excerpt on the Stanford.edu site, and a used copy will be on the way soon. Thanks again, and have a great New Year.
