Making holidays over Christmas and New Year on one of the East Frisian Islands is very popular in the north of Germany. We stayed on Juist this year. Essentially these islands are a chain of sandbanks obstructing the coast of East Friesland. They have little vegatation on the dunes, which is tenaciuosly defended by the local people. With wind and tidal streams the islands wander from west to east, loosing sand on the west which settles on the east end of the islands. The Kalfamer ist the east end of Juist. Just above the horizon you may see the next island Norderney.
