Nice and clean; an appropriate image to place upon a promontory, for all ships to see. - David Lyga

@David Lyga actually, david, if you don't know -- this is a replica of one of the two engines at the driving of the golden spike, completing the Transcontinental Railroad on may 10, 1869. It is at the Golden Spike National Historic Site, located 50 miles north and west of Ogden adjacent to the town of Promontory.

I remember hearing about that 'meeting' back in 1960 when I was in Fourth Grade. I always wondered what would have happened if they had been off, laterally, by a foot?!?!? - David Lyga

@David Lyga it's funnier than that, Dave -- the competing teams were getting paid by the mile, so they quite literally didn't want to meet. The SP crews built rail bed way past Promontory, all the way into Ogden and almost to Weber Canyon. The UP was on its way west.

The federal government had to step in and tell them that, yes, they would meet up, and Promontory was the place. Next year is the 150th anniversary, there will be a big party.
