Juniper, Black Canyon of the Gunnison

This image was taken of a Juniper in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison on a threatening day. Lightning strikes were hitting nearby hill tops. This is still a test adjustment.

This image was taken on an overcast, threatening day. I had found this Juniper that had obviously had a tough life as could be seen by the way that it had grown at such a twisted angle. Additionally, the broken branch near the middle of the tree is further evidence of a difficult life. As I was setting up and photographing the clouds and the sky continued to darken, the wind picked up speed and I could hear thunder claps, and could see lightning strikes on nearby hills. I was trying to finish the roll of film without getting soaked or struck by lightning. I had composed the image so there were 3 trees or bushes in the composition with the path acting as a leading line from the lower right. The somber overcast conditions and clouds added to the strength of the image and the indication of the difficult life of the tree. Rich

Rich, I remember these Colorado storms well, so I know that you probably didn't have much time before the rain started pouring down. Fortunately, you managed to get off a wonderful shot of a juniper tree. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Robert,

Thanks for the kind words. I was fortunate to have completed photographing and gotten out and back to the vehicle before the rain or possibility of being struck by lightning. The somber overcast lighting contributes to the "portrait" of this tough Juniper that has survived a life of adversity and difficult weather conditions. Rich
