Irish republican James Connolly was born in Edinburgh's Cowgate in 1868. Opposing British rule in Ireland, he was one of the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising. Deafeted, Connolly was arrested and executed by the British. His birth is remembered with a memorial in the Cowgate.
