My suggestion would be to use a reflector on the right to fill in the lighting a bit; a simple piece of white (or gold for color) mat board or foam core would do it.
Thanks for the comment. Yeah, the shadows are pretty dark. I kind of like the dramatic contrast, but lightening the dark side of her face would have been nice.
Why Mark? I like the sharp contrast right in the middle. It goes well with the bright window and dark room, her light and dark clothes and her skin going for dark to light. A reflector would make it too flat.
I agree with Ari in about 90% of what he said - the only thing I would think could be an improvement is just enough reflecte light to pring outher left eye a little more. Then again, that may look a touch creepy, I don't know...just a thought
Ari-- My preference would be to cast just enough light to bring out the left eye a bit more; I tend to like stronger contrast in black & white, not so much in color. Just my personal taste.
Ausleigh-- Part of the reason for the suggestion was having just read your thread on shoestring studio lighting. When using window light you have a cheap option for controlling the light by using a reflector.
Mark, I appreciate the thoughts on the lighting, and for sure the next time I shoot in a situation like that, I'll see about having a reflector handy. If nothing else, I can try the shoots with and without the reflected light and see which ones turn out more appealing.
I have to admit though, like I said earlier, I rather like the drama created by the contrast.
I would move her away from the window a little, use a large reflector to bounce some light into the left side of her face, and frame the shot so that the window and the legs aren't in the composition.
