Do you really mean, "sacrifice"? As in sacrificed to... someone or something spiritual? Or am I being naive? Did the dog catcher get them?

Yes, they did. "Sacrifice" is the word they use, thats why I use it too.

I mean "they" because three persons work in the streets "collecting" them. "Sacrifice" have a milder meaning than "execute", or "kill", and is used for this reason, not for religious purposes.

a very powerful image.brings tears to my eyes,especially the one little guy in the top left he seems to be trapped under all the others begging to be adopted and given a loving home but it is just the picture and his little body is all that is left.it is a shame.jose thanks for sharing this image,i dont know how you were able to take it i would have been a blubbering mess.such a huge message written in this photograph.
