Hi John, Its a water wheel - an early form of energy to drive mechanisms/machinery. One of the early applications being to grind grain into flour. This particular wheel is really ornamental, though its output shaft does drive some internal belt wheels which I think are just for show. Anyplace where a flow of water is strong enough to turn a wheel, that energy can provide force, generate electricity, etc. I buy some grain at this place for making killer sourdough.

With enough time around the skilled folks here, my eye gets less clumsy sometimes. I learn more here since last fall than I did in the prior 18mo on mostly digital sites.
