I wasn't going to post again, but kept fiddling. 'Rather an education. 'Don't know if anyone else sees it as improvement or not, but I like it better. 'Seems to give more detail in the leaf surfaces w/out the contrast getting bawdy. It was also simple- a red filter instead of the yellow used. Sigh.
Of the three, I prefer this one. Detail in the shadows and the mid tones make it my first choice. I don't usually comment on cropping as I think that is a makers decision, but a removal of the light areas at the top might be something to consider.
rmann, I sure appreciate hearing from you. The light & contrast looked more natural to me & it seems like the detail is more complete. 'A bit embarassing how all the flailing about wasn't as good as a change of filter. 'Rather an education.
On the crop - cutting out the light spots would take about an inch of the darker leaf (12-2 o'clock position). Would you make that trade? or simply burn in the light spots?
Again, hearing your thoughts is good medicine for me. Thank You.
I like this one better although I would have darkened down the background at the 11 o'clock a bit. Since you are probably using PS have you overlaid a golden mean trace over the image to see how things line up? Is there any cropping and burning that could be done to draw your eye to a focal point? Having a great photo tonality wise is a great first step, now insure it captures and leads the eye.
Yes, Grahamp. It looks more like cabbage than an attempt at artisty. I wanted cabbge, but vividly.
Eric, I use LR for most, and PS Elements for touching up any lint/dust. 'Not familiar w/ the golden mean trace. I've worked so much at getting a tonal image, I've not gotten much beyond that - and you're right - its in order. Again, I sure appreciate your kind help.
Again, sincere thanks, Eric. 'Really is an excellent walk through on how it applies. Many Thx for posting the link. I'd not heard the concept since college days & haven't thought about it in composition at all. It would seem to mean that a square format will always need a crop that brings it into conformity, that 35mm or 6x9 needs the least cropping, etc. 'Would seem a fairly dramatic change to how I look through a square finder.
