The other day I picked up a Kodak Tourist, the kind with a uncoupled RF, for a whopping $1.50, after cleaning it up I realized this would be the perfect camera to teach the twins photography with. The kids spent a while indoors learning how to measure the distance to an object and set the focus on the camera and cock/fire the shutter. After randomly choosing who got to take the first photograph (through eeny, meeny, miny, moe), my son decided to photograph a neighbors garage door. My son is shown here mid-counting from the garage door to the camera,
3 feet, 4 feet, 5 feet
After a giant gust of wind blew the tape measure astray, shortly after this photo was snapped, he aborted the garage door shoot and chose a nearby tree, he figured, who needs the hassle? My daughter a few mins later picked a different tree. Needless to say, they love their new camera. They also are young enough that they dont question the method of focus, they think it normal to have to get out the tape measure! I now know how satisfied my photo teachers must have felt after all that practice and seeing the students get out in the field and apply it. The twin's photos came out great too, no light leaks or anything. I think this might be the most important learning tool I have bought them in a while.
