They used to do this on the Sussex coast where my grandparents used to live. As I remember, there were lots of rusty (but well lubricated) hand winches anchored in the shingle, and some wood sleepers to help keep the hull off the stones during winching.
Thanks a lot for your comments. As far as I remember there was also a winch at the beach, but I think the fishermen primarily used tractors to pull up their fishing vessels. The grain is most likely caused by my lack of scanning skills.
