The Wendland, situated in Lower Saxony, is one of the least populated regions in Germany and so once politically chosen as the place where to dump Germanys high radioactive nuclear waste. (Deep under the earth in caverns driven into a huge saltdome though.) The local people fight this plan for about thirty years now.
Low populated as it is, many artists and crafts people live there. Once a year, between Ascension Day and Whitsuntide, they open their studios and workshops for the public and invite artist from other regions to show their work there too. You can ride by bike from one village to the next, have lunch and coffee and visite galleries and studios. It's great fun! During one of these trips the picture was taken.
