Harman Direct Positive Paper Safelight Test

Harman Direct Positive Paper Safelight Test

These test strips were made by preflashing the paper to a point that was just short of exhibiting a tone (to overcome the papers inertia & increase sensitivity). I then placed a coin on the strips and left them for various times at various distances from my two safe-lights. The top two images were 2 minutes at 1 foot (which is asking for trouble). The two lower images were 4 feet away for 30 seconds. Worryingly all four show an image of the coin. The images on the left are with a Patterson Red 'safe' light, those on the right are with a photax dome type A (red).

i think i'm missing something here but isn't positive paper meant to have some red sensitivity?

logically it seems you're right. i was wondering the same thing.

The paper is orthochromatic - sensitive to every colour except red. The fact sheet says you can use a deep red safe-light. Well, it does mean DEEP red. My darkroom lights are red (rather than amber or brown) and I've used them with ortho sensitised materials before, but they're obviously not safe for this paper. It needs a deep ruby red, like a wratten 29, or maybe even a 92 (darker still).
