Guophervágge

Guophervágge, Sarek N.P., Sweden
29 June 2010, around 4 AM

The day before had been all rainy, as would be the day after. But during the night in between, the sky broke and the rising sun burned me out of the tent. At this time of year the sun does not set and it can be pretty powerful even in the early morning. It also has a 'golden' quality to it.

Guophervágge is the Sami name of the valley, taken from the characteristic mountain Guopher, on the left here, with some lenticularis above it.

The print came out slightly harsh, probably because I developed it slightly long (3 min) and because the grade 2 filter was too much.

Toning in Agfa Viradon New was meant to take away some of he harshness and to give it a nice tone. It came out a little overdone, I find.

Fomatone 131 reacts very strongly to Viradon. 2 minutes in 1+24 is already long (a stop bath was used). Next time better I will try 1 minute in the same dilution.

It's a lovely print with a great sense of place. The scale of the place comes through nicely, along with its sort of understated beauty. Swedes like their vast open spaces.

I like your treatment here a lot -- it's very striking!

Very nice, well composed and toned.

It is just fine as it is.... not to worry. Many of us would be happy to have such. Logan
