Part of my series on Great Salt Lake. Cold enough that morning to numb the fingers quickly... no wind at all. Haze & high clouds in the air. The shadows were dancing off the salt & water & the light was wonderful. A good morning.
Beautiful high key image. At the Elks Lodge here in Tonopah is an old photo with brass Southern Pacific Co. logo on the frame showing a 1910's Steamer steaming across the old wooden causeway at GSL. I've been scheming to steal it for years.
Beautiful light and strong shadows, the posts lead the eye into the distance ... Amazing detail, even in this reduced size. Would love to see the print.
The posts were originally put into the mud & salt pan across from each other & then canvas was laid over them. Dirt & mud was shoveled onto the canvas to make a dam. Then salt brine was pumped into the reservoir bounded by the canvas/dirt cams & allowed to evaporate & the salt was harvested.
In the flats on various areas of the lake these remain. Now abandoned from an industry that was going 75-125 years ago.
I will post some later showing these as the lake was going down during the past 7 years of drought. They are covered in salt. In some cases over 2 feet thick. Some nice looking patterns.
