Great Grandmother Beathe

Great Grandmother Beathe

My great grandmother Beathe. Taken in the late 1930s by my grandfather, who was an enthusiastic photographer all his life. I inherited some of his negatives, and printed this a few years ago. I was inspired to post it by the photo of his great grandfather Thomas Bertilsson posted a couple of weeks ago.

Beathe was born in Norway in 1865, came to the U.S. in 1880, and farmed with her husband Lars until he died in 1918. She lived until 1944, so I never knew her. She is shown here with her granddaughters Beverly (my mother, on the left) and Marilyn.

Oh, what a treasure you have there.

She looks so sweet. I knew a lot of old Norwegian farm wives, growing up in northern Minnesota. They were wonderful people. I bet she could make a mean batch of lefse.

Oh god, I can taste it now. Right off the griddle, slathered with butter that yesterday was still inside the cow. A touch of brown sugar. Manna from heaven.

Well done!

And it's so much fun that I could help give you enough of a kick in the chair to post this great print. These photographs are such treasures.
