GrammaMae

My dad's mother, Mae, around 1905. This was one of a few photos my sister found while cleaning out her husband's storage locker. Before this, I never saw any of Mae in her younger days and had no idea she was such a beauty. I only knew her in her 70's. She died when I was quite young.

Delightful. You are encouraging me to address some of my family heirloom photographs, some considerably earlier than this and much faded. I really should get on and make copies. A strong profile and good nose. Irish (or perhaps Scottish) I assume?

BINGO! Mae Dougherty, daughter of Irish immigrants. Redheaded, keenly intelligent, tough as nails and did not suffer fools. I was only 7 when she passed and I remember her as the perfect grandmother, but my 3 older siblings (all girls) held her in awe. She lived next door to us on the farm and she really helped guide them into womanhood. She and my granddad owned and operated a bar full of farmers and loggers and so she took no crap from nobody. She even got into it with a new local priest and they had to bring an earlier priest back to do her funeral. She would send me out to play army with a real rifle, taught me to feed sugar cubes to the horses, made fresh donuts and the best lefse ever.

Svenedin - Yes, copy and restore those photos! My sister is one who just throws out anything once she's done with it, but her husband was a packrat and saved everything. It's just luck that these are still in existence. There are several in my sibling's families who will love to have these. I am sure the same is true in your family.

Bravo, Pbro. It really is a killer portrait & sounds like a magnificent woman. Thank you for posting. 'Hope you uncover more like it.

Excellent...yes, a beauty. Is a studio identified?

I inherited many photos from two sides of my mother's family going back to 1880 or so, edited for quality (mostly excellent studio stuff) and identity, printed seven sets and distributed to appropriate family. The originals will last another 50-100 years, the scans may last on DVD, and I expect my prints to last in their archival albums. I also scanned and saved the studio names, as well as scanning some beautiful but damaged 616 negatives...which yielded my favorites .
