I suspect that's a dead Elm and it's been dead for a long time. Sad but a beautiful thing nonetheless. I'm glad it was left and not immediately felled.
The striking contrast and grain give the perception of intensity, when the theme of the scene is one of peacefulness. It is rather interesting, that polarization.
If you look at the upper left, where the sky begins just above the tree limbs, you will see a wild reticulation or sorts that was probably not intended, not even noticed perhaps. Whether the Promicol or process did this I do not know, but it becomes a component of such mental polarization. - David Lyga
