I practice what I call "Real" portraiture. Pretentious term, I know; at least it's only one syllable. I'm interested in content, and all other aspects of the picture I'd like to call a portrait are secondary. So focus, motion blur, composition, all stuff like that, have to take a back seat. I love it when the right place is in focus and everbody has been still and the light is just right, PLUS there is strong human expressiveness. But the latter suffices, because it is so rare, and the others must remain bonuses. --le

'blad ELX, Zeiss 120 mm f4 'Makro' lens.
Exposure
f8 at 1/8 sec., Daylight.
Film & Developer
FILM: Kodak TMY, 120 format, at EI 200. FILM DEVELOPMENT: Xtol diluted 1+2, 21C, 12 minutes, normal agitation.
Paper & Developer
Ilford Warmtone FB paper, 16x20 inch sheet size; Developed in Ansco 120 (Potassium) print developer formula; Durst L1200 Enlarger with Multigraph light, 80 mm APO-Rodagon lens; Selenium toner (Kodak) diluted 1+5 at about 32C for 10 min.
I wonder if a digital presentation lends itself to a desire for sharpness? This portrait exists as a 16x20 FB print (made under an enlarger ...) and it looks very good. Yes, it is far from sharp, but the expressive qualities of silver prints strike me as different from digital output. I can't really defend this scientificly, but it seems that way to me. In any case, I'm just a humble photo grapher, and I take what I can get. --le
