Gaustatoppen

21 August 2012: Gaustatoppen (1883m), a peak in the South of Norway, seen from Hardangervidda; in the foreground is a nameless (to me at least) small lake at 1161m.

My first four prints on Fomatone 131, all of this same negative, but toned differently: untoned, toned in selenium 1+4 15min, selenium 1+10 3min, Viradon New 1+24 4min.

This print: selenium 1+10 3min, dried on a hot metal plate (high gloss).

I like the strongly toned selenium print most. Of course the possibilities are endless.

Thanks for your thoughts Bertil, as always on the mark and very welcome. The paper seems indeed very sensitive to all sorts of parameters, more so than other fb papers that I have used. Exposure, contrast grade, developing time, toning- small variations in each of them have a noticeable impact on the final print. Normally I develop papers to completion (or 99.5% of it), but this paper still seems to change in contrast and tone after 3 minutes, in the warmtone developer of my choice. Contrast went up and tone grew colder the longer the development, or at least that's what I thought I saw on the test strips. To be honest I was having trouble getting four identical prints to start with, especially because I didn't batch print & develop all four of them. Perhaps the temperature of the developer changed a bit in between prints, or maybe I developed the one print half a minute longer than the other- it could all have affected this very sensitive paper. The greenish tone is indeed there, as with many other untoned papers. I personally do not mind this cast unless compared directly to toned prints. Then I prefer a bit more warmth and the green cast removed.Lovely paper, perhaps not for straight prints without more, but great for any experimentation. Lots to explore still.

I will definitely try that, beit with another negative- bit bored with this one now. Also, a negative with some more in-between values should be more suitable for what you propose. Thanks, Sander
