Since taking these photos I've come to realize that the Sigma is definitely lacking in clarity and the camera lens combo doesn't focus as well as I can. Your thoughts on subject, composition, etc. are always welcome.
The focus/softness issue, I believe, is the camera/lens combination. I've since learned not to trust the autofocus function, especially on older models. The Sigma lens is turning out to be a dog, too.
And yes, I have been thinking of cropping this and the following print, square...
Joey, I have a similar Sigma lens for my old Nikon FM. Same type of problem, although its manual focus it just isn't tack sharp. One thing I do like about it now, after living with it for a while, is the use of this lens for portraits. It has a nice effect on faces, a bit softer than my primes. You might give yours a try and see if it isn't better suited to this type of work. tim
It happens to be in the right focal lengths for portraits and it also happens to be ill suited for wide angle stuff too (vignettes at 28mm). Its gotta be good for something other than a paper weight...
Joey,
Soft or not I like what you have done here! This in my opinion is an excellent image,
good job. I hope you can overcome your camera/lens problems real quick, since we need to see more of your images.
