The Travelling Javanese Theater now has a permanent home outside of Yogyakarta. Performances are held once a week by men and women who love to act. The director decides the theme of the story and discusses it with the actors the hour before the performance. Then, the actors get ready in their roles - good/evil king, good/evil servant(s), ugly/beautiful women, comic relief. The musicians at the foot of the stage play throughout the performance, although they quiet down during big dramatic or comedic scenes. The crowd was a mixture of old and young. It was held way out in the boonies (kind of near Pramaban Temple) and the only people there were locals (save for myself). It's been a long time since I've been in that kind of situation on my travels, but I have to say it was a really interesting one.
