Freestyle Silver Artist White Base

This is my first print on the new Freestyle Silver Artist Series. I picked a neg with high contrast to see how it handles everything in between and gosh this paper is just beautiful in hand. This scan doesnt do it justice. I toned one in gold the other not in gold and they hardly look any different, makes me wonder if this paper is receptive much to gold or my toner was exhausted (more testing this spring/summer). Note I mix my Liquidol a little harder than 1:9. The label says 1:9 which is 10% stock to total amount (1L), I mix it 14.3% which gets real deep blacks (143ML stock to 857 distil water). Btw, thanks Tom/Dora for being the test pilots. I will bring a print for you at PS this summer.

This does have a similar look to Varycon ... which I believe I read supplied its high-silver-content emulsion. Tonal range is great for so much contrast. Wouldn't take a lot of work to even out the highlights/shadows. Hate to sound like a total noob, but what's the benefit to the different base over Varycon fiber?

As I sit here holding a Varycon matte in one hand and the FSSA (Freestyle Silver Artist Series), the Varycon has a certain grit feel to it while the FSSA feels more smooth and pleasantly textured. FSSA is also much heavier and meaty in hand. The Varycon also is a bit more shiny, which for me, I prefer a dead matte look. I enjoy printing a stack of photographs to hand to family/friends to leaf through, and the feel of the paper is a big selling point to me. I generally don't put my prints behind glass, so the benefits above might be moot to anyone else. One technical note, the scan above is a bit more extreme than the print (ie it looks online really b vs w, whereas the print is more even per se).

Paper looks promising, Andy. When I run out of Ilford Art 300 I might give this a whirl.

Hey, I know these people! This print is hanging on our wall. You are right, the scan does not do it justice. It's a beautiful print and the paper is really, really nice. Thanks, Andy!
