Frank Dean, Blacksmith

Frank Dean, Blacksmith

I photographed Frank at his forge at Rodmell, East Sussex in 1997-8. He must have been one of the last surviving traditional blacksmiths having begun working with his father at this forge in 1932, his father starting at the forge in 1910. I later made a book of salt prints from the series.

  1. Yes
The brighter and dimmer parts of this interior scene are nicely balanced. Was this the OM4 with HP5+?

Nice. Fort Vancouver National Historic Site features a reconstructed blacksmithing building with reenactors. They said that blacksmiths like to keep the light level very low in their workplace because they want to see the glow of the hot metal.
