Fortress "Fort Vechten"

Fortress "Fort Vechten"

Cast iron staircase.

Fort Vechten is part of a defensive line of some 30 fortresses build between about 1840 up to 1890, that was supposed to protect the western part of the Netherlands from foreign invasion. It used a unique defensive approach, using the fortresses in combination with careful controlled flooding of the polders surrounding them, making passage of armies impossible. The "Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie" now runs for inclusion on the World Heritage List of the UN.

I think the clipped corners and sepia really add alot to this image..really dates it back to the early days of photography which is when this was built. Nice concept and execution.

Thanks all, and especially Richard for pointing out Atget...
Shame on me probably, but I had not yet heard of the historic photographer Eugene Atget... I have know looked him up and discovered the Atget Photography website (http://www.atgetphotography.com). I do see the connection, also the remark about Atget's photography being "wholly poised"...
