Formation Flying

Formation Flying

Formation Flying, Flight of Two. April 13, 2013: We were following in a similar aircraft, a 1946 Globe Swift. Specific training for formation flying is imperative for safety. I am a pilot, but was riding as a passenger on this trip to an airshow in Burnett, Texas. We were at 3500 feet. Constant adjustments in throttle and pitch are required to maintain the desired distance, slightly below and behind the lead aircraft, with radio contact maintained between pilots. The lead aircraft does all the navigation and communication with Air Traffic Control. This picture was taken out an open window at about 140 knots airspeed. I had the camera strap tight around my neck, and had to be careful not to stick the lens out into the slipstream!

nice shot ... yeah, I never much like flying in tight too much .... though at times it seem to be the only way in at the big airshows ....
