Firetower Road - REPRINT

6x7cm silver gelatin contact print.

I decided I wanted to try going a little further with this print. A bit more contrast and mostly I wanted the roads to glow, to look more like they did when I was standing there... This print has soft details in the lanes but they are much brighter. I also made them a little more even from bottom to top.

This is a link to the print I made last week:

(Apparently I cropped it a hair differently when I scanned it as well, it's the same negative.)

Is this print for sale?
  1. Yes
Believe it or not, I prefer the old one... But I'm the kind of guy who appreciates the muted elegance of toned down highlights.

Thank you, Thomas. I'm not sold on either at this point. I like them both for different reasons (including the toned down highlights you mention). Not sure which I'll end up mounting... maybe both!

Shawn, I much prefer this one and can see what you are trying to do. If anything it may look stronger with even more conrast. Have you thought about transfering this to a lith neg/pos? But whatever, a very strong image, well done.

Thanks, Clive. I love lith prints but do not currently have those skills or materials. I appreciate the thoughts!

This looks like one of those negs that look easy at first, and become a real bear to wring out what you want.Compared to the other, I like the tone in the tire tracks, but the contrast in the pebbles is starting to get distracting to my eye.Viewing it on a monitor probably has a lot to do with that, however.I'd love to see a print of either one.

Thank you for the thoughts, I appreciate them. It was a bear! I see what you're saying about the pebbles. The scan is as close to the contrast of the print as I could make it but the print is... smoother... that's probably the right word. The people I've shown this to in person have all chosen the harder print. Those who have only seen the scan have been pretty evenly split... I guess what I need to do is just make a decision!!!! =) Hopefully I'll have a chance to mount prints tonight and force myself to do so.
