Find the cost of freedom - securing

Documenting my friends fathers funeral. I wasn't sure about intruding with a camera, but later my friend said he was going to ask me to bring it but thought it would be presumptuous. His father was a Marine and so I expected the usual fat old guys from the VFW to be there. I didn't know he was a retired full colonel and would be receiving full military honors.

It was an f-22 day and the yellow filter was quite unnecessary, rendering the light blue trousers very close to the navy blue tunics. Contrast lowered and slightly lightened for posting. I have eliminated any family, etc.

The family reaction has been gratifying, but I really am unable to judge my own work. Your criticism is desired.

I could not find the words to criticize these pics even if they were not good. You did good and the images speak for themselves. They are perfect as a documentary style i think and with such strong imagery technical qualities are not important.Even though he is retired i still found myself a little choked up. Frame up a collage for them and they would be happy i am sure.

Edit to add... I am not saying they lack technical quality at all, just commenting on the fact that strong images stand on their own sometimes.

I'm a former Royal Marine and I find this series of pictures not only excellent as documentary photography but personally very moving especially when today I learned a sergeant in my old unit 42 Royal Marine Commando was killed while on patrol in Afghanistan by an I.E.D, and although it's many years since I left the military I still often remember the friends we left behind

Benjiboy, thank you for your comments. I posted these in tribute to people like you and your old friend.

Thank you for your service.

Edit to add: We having a thunderstorm right now. I don't know if it means anything, but seconds after I hit "post message", a lightning bolt struck about 30 feet outside the open window where I am sitting. It almost knocked me out of my chair.
