These 4 images try to give some impression of the exhibition '1914' presently on display in the former coking plant 'Zollverein' Essen, Germany. - The reality of for example the gas attacks follows.
This image is very graphic for me seeing the old gas masks. My grandfather was in service over in Germany during this era as a machine gunner. He received a heavy dose of mustard gas while in a trench and lost his sense of smell and taste that never returned for him. I actually have a photo of him in his military fatigues or uniform I guess. It was a studio take so probably a formal uniform of sorts. This is a very nice photo outlining some of the military pieces used in that era. I did notice the helmet in the background which was quite similar to the later version used in the second WW. Those always seemed a bit better for overall protection to me with the edges protecting the ears more then the open bucket style.
