An inquisitive young gull who didn't seem to mind as I played with a macro lens (new to me). He did keep moving of course.....constantly adjusting focus. He occupies the whole frame. Possibly a descendant of Sea-Basil (we named him after an idiot junior officer).
I managed to get one similar but not a juvenile on a waste bin in Whitby on a telephoto but it was certainly no better than this one on a Macro. Just out of interest have you been able to work out which part(s) if any is/are of a different shade compared to what it/they would be without an orange filter. Was it a screw-on filter? A square one in a filter holder might have been easier to remove but even then your arm and hand movement still might have been enough to make it take flight or at least precipitate its movement
They don't get their adult plumage until their fourth year. This one is nearly an adult and has a yellow beak so it has ended up lighter with the orange filter. His legs are pinky/orange so they are a bit lighter too. The plumage is mainly shades of grey with brown speckles on the neck and head and a white and black tail so I don't think the plumage is altered much. Yes a screw in filter and a lens hood on top. I was much too close to mess about with it. I think the only reason he didn't fly away was that he knew I had my lunch in my backpack. It may seem strange to have an orange filter on a macro lens but it is also a good general purpose 50mm (if slow) lens (as the picture I will post next shows).
Thanks. Makes sense. Possibly the beak and feet would have benefited from no filter but I say that the hindsight of now knowing what the affect colours were. If you had not mentioned about the orange filter I doubt anyone commenting would have said anything
