This technique works well with almost anything that is somewhat translucent and reasonably reflective. Somewhere I have half of an "artistically" broken eggshell treated this way, and it is sort of mesmerizing to look at.

stradibarrius: I saw your apple and the comments on it; I have my pear slice from the opposite side, but didn't post it because my wife thought that it was a bit....shall we say....anatomical. Consider yourself warned.....

For anyone interested in the technique, there is a cutout in the mat-board background that matches the shape of the pear, but slightly smaller all around. A single strobe is on the other side of the board, and a bedsheet draped over the whole setup controls the bounce light from the room to serve as a fill. There is a good range of variation possible--the color of the background card, the size and shape of the opening, the distance from the subject to the card, and the hardness of the light source all affect the result. I could play with this basic setup for days, I think.
