This is a great series Tony. I'm a guitarist myself (I'm not saying I'm any good), and you have captured the feeling of playing when everything goes the way it should. It's very difficult to describe the feeling when the crowd is buzzing, and the licks just flow. Your shots convey this.
Phil,
I prefer TriX but shot some leftover Neopan 400 for one of the festivals I attended recently. It is more contrasty than TriX and is a bit thinner in the shadows.
My approach to exposure at concerts is can I get something useful on film at 1/60th of a second? I adjust aperture accordingly up to widest available. These shots were taken with 85mm 1.8 nikon lens. "Useful" is up to 2 stops "underexposed". I then usually overdevelop ("push") the film in XTol 1+1 marginally. I then use split grade printing as with contrasty negs and not much in the way of mid-tones (performers like black!) the mid-tones don't matter much. Highlights first at grade 0 or 1/2 and selective burning on grade 5 to get true black where it's needed.
