Thanks for the comments everyone! I am not sure why this shot in particular is so grainy - at least compared to some of the others on the roll. It is expired film, but the other one of Elizabeth (not smiling one) has very subtle grain compared to this one. Do you think it is the shallow depth of field or perhaps a slight underexposure? Nonetheless, I love this shot of her and will be printing it soon ... so I will compare it with this neg scan (I guess it could be that too).

It can definitely have to do with exposure. When you scan over- or under-exposed negatives and then adjust contrast a lot digitally, grain can become overemphasized. I'm sure the print will look different. Either way it's a wonderful picture.
