Well, the tree stumps were quite old and well-worn so no risk of splinters, especially across the grain like that. But the bark was crumbling so it made a lot of dust. Keeping the flesh tone is a matter of manipulating the subsequent layers applied - you strip away the colors that you don't want from any given area with a watercolor brush.
