Ed Bearss at Monocacy Battlefield

A portrait of Ed Bearss, lecturing at the Best Farm on the Monocacy National Battlefield. Ed is a national treasure - 91 years old, combat-wounded WW II vet (hit five times by a Japanese machine gun in Samoa), Chief Historian Emeritus of the US Park Service, and still leading tours 200+ days a year. This is a somewhat unusual portrait of Ed on tour because I caught him with his eyes open. He often closes his eyes when talking because 'it helps me picture the story in my head better'.
Location
Monocacy Battlefield, Frederick. Maryland
Equipment Used
Rolleiflex 2.8E Planar
Film & Developer
Tri-X, Pyrocat HD
I love these guys. They gave us the world we live in. And asked for nothing in return. I'm not sure we have treated it well and fulfilled their trust in us. Soon now they will all be gone. Very soon.

It looks like he might be around for a few more years yet. When you are fit enough to lead tours for 200+ days a year at 91, the clock doesn't usually stop quickly. He sounds like the kind of great grandfather that keeps the kids up with stories way beyond their bedtime.
