I like the muted colours for this kind of a shot. It picks out the shutter colours very well. Portra seems to convey the sombre photojournalistic nature of the shot very well. I wonder however if B&W would have worked better?
The block paving colours are interesting. I think that the blocks are probably all grey but the part affected by artificial light makes it look as if gradually the paver changed the colour to a muted brick-red. At least I think this is the effect of artificial light and say this because I had an even starker example from a print I made from Fuji Superia taken on the Guinness tour in Dublin. It was in the transport section where models of ships, lorries etc were hung from the roof. I hadn't really noticed the effect as my eyes accomodated it but on the print it was as if the wall painter had decided to change the colour of the bricks using a ruler. It was that sharp! Then I looked again and remembered the roof lights were high powered tungsten bulbs and the line matched the exact shadow thrown by the lights while the lower part of the wall was lit by daylight.
I don't think there is anything that one can do about this kind of cast but I'd be interested in anybody's else's comments on a solution.
