Eating lunch

This was shot in the city of Miguel Calmon over the summer.

During the middle of the day a strong storm came through, and I sat it out inside a pizza/burger/pastry fast food type restaurant. This kid and his sister came inside for shelter and a quick bite as well.

This frame is *very* underexposed, and I was surprised that I could get this much detail from it. This was printed on max magenta filtration, and I underexposed/overdeveloped the paper to increase contrast. I think that I'll be able to clean this up a bit and explore more complicated negs with a grade 5 filter and the same contrast pushing technique.

BTW, this print was developed on a 3 week old working solution of ID-78 , and the developer is still going strong.

I'm very happy with this frame, but would like to hear your opinions on it.

This is a lovely image, I love the light on his face, and his and her gestures. It looks underexposed, and sounds like quite an epic darkroom session, but I think you pulled together a nice print. The only thing that bothers me is the round thing at the very top of the frame, it's a little distracting, and keeps drawing my eye up. Maybe crop it out, or just burn it in a bit more so it's less obvious.

Thanks for the comments and suggestion, Suzanne. I'll burn that out next time I print this, which should be with a grade 5 filter. And yeah this was a complicated print. I had attempted this twice before and given up...

The overall tone looks right for this kind of image, might try burning in with a scrap of #5 over the hole in the tool to bring out more separation between the boys hair and the background dimness, careful not to overdo it. Cropping at his sisters shoulders would seem to do the job of eliminating the distraction at the top of the picture without losing the sense of her being there with him. Good luck with it.
