Dunstanburgh Castle

Dunstanburgh Castle

An oft photographed scene but still one to enjoy.

This was an experimental shot. We were in the area for a walk and I knew I wouldn't be in this position in the evening when I could use a long exposure to add some mystery to the scene and seeing the clouds making a nice shape I decided to take several shots on the one frame.

On the first frame I didn't work out how when to switch the multi-exposure switch back to the normal position and under-exposed the frame by 1/8 second having taken three 1/8 second exposures instead of the required 4. On the second frame I managed to make the same mistake! And then on the third, as I waited for the waves to be in the right place for the fourth exposure, a group of people came and stood and began playing a few feet in front of the camera! So all three frames were underexposed by 1/8 second.

To try and rescue the photo I applied ferrycyanide bleach to various areas using a brush. The results are passably acceptable but the foreground as a whole is dark and lacking in contrast.

Still, I'll be interested in your views.

I like it as it is. It almost has a moonlit kind of feel to it. If I'm being really picky, then maybe a midges more ferri on the rocks, but not too much as that would destroy the mystery this shot has. Like it, like it a lot!

The sky has interesting texture, as does the water. But the blacks feel both weak and blocked up at the same time, unfortunately. The lack of local contrast to separate especially mid-tones is a real problem.
You could try to print this in lith chemistry, as you could extract some tones not visible here.

I am with Blighty on this. It might not be the most technically perfect shot but it captures a mood and emotion that I feel, having been to Dunstanburgh. Seeing more would actually be less here. This denies the visual senses of detail to a small extent but feeds my emotional senses completely.

The ferri has been applied here very deftly
