I'm sorry
I don't feel like you guys. this is almost there but several thing need to be addressed. first the block of dead space in the lower left corner doesn't balance out the photo. second if you are going to use a 4x5 get everything in focus. the texture and tones in the grass are so interesting that when it goes out of focus just kills it. last too much sky. just bring it down slightly. there isn't anything in the sky to help the photo.
Just thought I give my views. which maybe worth nothing.
regards
mike
Yes, I would have to agree. The tonality in this picture is very seductive. However, the shortcomings as outlined above detract from the overall composition. I've looked at this picture several times and the out focus grasses in the background are very bothersome. The other issue is that the boardwalk appears to be abruptly cutoff on the right side. I believe that there was an opportunity to do a nice perspective shot if the "long view" of the boardwalk would have been included. Had this been done, the sky wouldn't have been so dominant in the composition. I have had these same issues; so my comments are the result of many of my own shots that I would have liked to have re-taken....
Thnaks for all the comments. I tend to agree about the sky, I have tried several crops but taking out more sky pushes the post to close to the frame and makes the picture feel unbalanced. But perhapes a little less could work.
As to the lack of focus, this is the scan. I had to use a cheap scanner at work which hasn't done a great job. On the print you can see each blade of grass even on the horizon.
Overall I have always thought that there is a better image in here somewhere!, back to the darkroom ......
