Downhill House on the Mussenden Demesne, north Derry coast. Built by the Anglican bishop of Derry in 1774, rebuilt after fire in 1851, and abandoned in the 1940s. More famous for its cliff top temple a few hundred yards away, but like the Giants Causeway, that is almost impossible to capture without crowds of people. This was a lonelier and more atmospheric spot, and far more redolent of its troubled past.
This recent batch of Acros is the first time I've used Rodinal for development. Like you I've tended to stick with DDX and go for a finer or almost grainless look with good tonality. I can then print 16x12" without hardly any grain showing.
However, I've seen a number of people on the APUG forums championing the Rodinal/Acros combination for its excellent acutance properties, and, as I've liked the results when used with Tri-X I thought I'd give it a go. I've found that I need to give development almost 10% extra then stated on the Massive Development Chart at DT, otherwise I am always having to use grades 3 or 4 when printing. I've always liked grain, if its the right sort, and so I am really happy my recent results at 1:50 dilution. I think I'll be using it a lot in future, especially as it works out at far less cost than devleping films with DDX and I am still on my first Rodinal bottle bought almost 18 months ago.
