I once worked at a place with a double helix staircase. One helix for going up, the other for going down. An efficient use of space for moving a lot of people around seven floors with little risk of collision. Confused people meeting it the first time!

Just an abstract / geometric snapshot so your impression is pretty much right on. To me the perpendicular helices are reminiscent of a propagating photon.
