A friend once told me that less light is always harder. Trying my hand at minimalism, I now know all too well what he meant. Hopefully the presentation online doesn't erase the shadow detail here, which is quite present.

Yes to all the above. Tell us about how you metered. if you bothered to do ?

I would meter my hand near the grafitti, knowing I had plenty of latitude.
 
@jtk That's exactly what I did. I used my fantastic Gossen Digisix, metered near the sunlit portion, opened up a stop and bracketed a stop on either side of that, as well. Nothing fancier than that, although I kind of am intrigued by going back for a reshoot and trying out stand development on this scene -- I'm curious about the difference in shadow detail and curbing of highlights.
