Interesting subject, but I think the composition is too bottom-weighted. With the frameline so tight to the bottom of the foreground doorway, and all the dead space above it, it feels awkward. The right-side foreground wall coming toward the viewer is also uncomfortable, as it makes you feel crowded.
I agree that it is an excellent job exposing and printing for what is a very challenging lighting situation.
Thanks for the comments, I wasn't sure what to expect when I took the shot but I was quite pleased, though as TheFlyingCamera said it is a bit busy in places.
I like it the way it is. The subject suggests 'cloisters', which in turn implies enclosure. The dark area at the top and the close wall on the right gives it the necessary claustrophobic feel and the wall on the right also pushes the doorway back, as Bertus said giving it a sense of depth. I think if it was 'calmed down' it wouldn't have the same impact. Admittedly a little more floor below the door might help. There's nothing to say a photograph isn't allowed to provoke negative emotion

Thanks, its interesting too see how people see pictures and what they make of them. I'm still new to this and its good to learn, I never really thought about the negative emotion only that it should be positive and its something I will try and think on in my own own work and when viewing others.
