Yellow2 Filter on left; IR filter on right shot on Ilford SFX 120. The IR rated at 25asa, Y2 at 200asa and developed for 10mins in Xtol stock solution at 22c.

I was interested to make this back to back comparison to prepare for a trip. Apart from the obvious tonal rendition I noticed the IR version is quite grainy compared to the Y2 and this may not be visible on the web. Both flatbed scanned.
At the risk of this sounding like a "serves you right" comment, the SFX seems to have lost you more in colour definition than it has gained in IR effects. The sails look bleached and the grass merges with the path. The sky and water are only slightly darker as well.
I suppose that the lesson I am taking from these 2 shots is that I'll need to consider carefully the SFX effect before taking the picture.
I am grateful for the comparison. It has made me realise that thinking in IR is essential.
I have seen other shots on this site using SFX which had a lot more impact than these 2 shots. I just don't know where to find them but they did make me think that it was possible to use SFX and get good results. Maybe you should google SFX and see what you can find.
Yep - tried the search but 'sfx' doesn't come up with anything.
The two sets of images I find interesting: the garden shot has much more impact in IR but falls on its face in the sailing images, where good old Y2 wins out. I did the tests as I know I'll be off on a trip and will need both IR and 'straight' images. Of course it is a compromise because something like the Rollei IR takes a lot of beating but nevertheless I'm happy to take along mostly SFX and just switch filters to suit a particular scene....Perhaps I ought to test Rollei with and without IR filters - has anyone got anything?
