Dancing Ledge - Big wave

I made another visit to dancing Ledge in Dorset over the Xmas break. As has now become the norm, the Mamiya 7 wanted to come in addition to the 5x4 gear.

The conditions were really wild, a force 8 SWerly had whipped up a fantastic swell. I was glad that I took the M7 because it is far cheaper to rattle off 10 shots on a roll of 120 than use sheet film to capture the waves crashing against the cliffs. Especially when using outdated Velvia 100F at £1 a roll! I need a hot-shoe spirit level, since horizons weren't very level........

I did shoot a lot of 5x4 too, but decided to post something from the M7 first.

Beautiful light! Seems like a pretty exposed and wild place to be standing.
Incidentally I spent some time in Dorset back in 1999. I liked it very much. I lived in the Swanage area.

Perfect timing Baxter, and the shutter speed was also perfect. I understand completely about the horizon line - if you look at the Christmas 2005 issue of Outdoor Photography, there is an image by Joe Cornish (page 30) which obviously has a horizon level problem, so it looks like you are in good company.

Wicked vantage point!

I love the look of the "cloud-like water" against the cliffside. But, the amount of cliffside showing pulls my eye away from the water. What would this look like if the left and right were cropped?

Thankyou for your positive comments.

It was surprisingly sheltered from the piece of cliff I was shooting from. The lower Ledge itself was fully awash, so I had to shoot pictures like this. Not that I minded. But am keen to get onto the lovely textured ledge itself, which is out of this shot.

Thom, this is about 4 miles west of Swanage, but a bit of a hike- 20 mins from the car park, in the dark!

John, I'm sure that cropping as you say would emphasise that aspect of the image which interests you most, but then you would lose the context of the scene. I don't think that the resultant small triangle of sky would look too good either.

Robert, not quite Hawaiian surf, but am happy to make do!
