My prints and negatives are packed away because I just moved. (Lost my darkroom, sad face here.) I was very pleased with the tonal range I got that day. I remember the film was something I didin't normally use. Also, the split toning is slightly more pronounced on my screen. I'll have to find those negs and see what it was. Thank you all for the positive feedback.
So sorry to hear of your darkroom. Hopefully you can build a new one. It would be a shame for you to not be able to print, with such an amazing portfolio of interesting photographs.
Thanks People, I appreciate your thoughts. When my wife went back to grad school, I gave up my studio, and now we've moved to a slightly smaller apartment, no darkroom. I do have a darkroom available though. I'm lucky enough to be friends with, and work with, the curator to the estate of Andre Kertesz. I was the digital artist for two recent books on Kertesz. He has a darkroom a few blocks from my new place, and I have unlimited access. Not the same as in my home where I can print till three in the morning in my undies, but I'm glad to have it. UV light box too. Happy face here.
Great bunch of people on this website, really, amazing.
Kertesz is one of my all time heroes, and it all has to do with vision. You are probably deserving of the luck to work in such an environment, although I imagine it didn't exactly fall in your lap... From what I've seen hard work pays off and there are no shortcuts.
I'm delighted to hear that you have access to a darkroom, and maybe happy that you don't print in your undies anymore...
Now I'll keep looking forward to seeing more of your work, Doug.
Thanks Thomas, Kertesz has been called a poet with a camera and I think that sums it up.
Actually the Kertesz thing did fall in my lap, I have to admit. I was desperate for some work one summer, when someone mentioned that Robert Gurbo, the big tall guy with the long pony tail who could be seen around my Brooklyn neighborhood, was the curator to the Estate of Andre Kertesz. A couple of days later I just walked up to him, introduced myself, and mentioned that I was looking for some freelance work. Right time, right place. That was about five years ago. We're great friends now, and I have the rare privilege of handling original Kertesz prints. Now I just have to get his darkroom back in full swing.
